Catalyst Credit Union would like to provide you with information on how you can protect yourself from becoming a victim. Fraud can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone. Some of the most common frauds we hear of today include Phishing, Skimming, Prize Scams and Identity Theft.
Avoid being scammed by reviewing the top ten scams from the Better Business Bureau.
Identity theft occurs when a fraudster obtains your personal information such as name, address and social insurance number and uses it for illegal purposes. This could include applying for banking accounts including and even loans in your name. This information can be collected through a fraudulent telephone call or email requesting this information or by collecting it from unprotected documents.
In order to protect yourself from identity theft it is important to protect your personal information. It is good practice to not provide these details through email or telephone. Keep confidential information protected in your home and shred all documents you plan to throw away.
In order to help prevent identity theft, Catalyst Credit Union will be holding our annual Shredfest at our Dauphin, Gilbert Plains and Roblin locations– watch for details. We are also holding our Fraud Awareness campaign from March 1 to May 31.
